Toilet Twinning - Alternative Gift Idea

Around 2.4 billion people (a third of the world's population) don't have a loo and every minute a child under the age of five dies because of dirty water & poor sanitation.

Women and girls without a loo are vulnerable to being attacked by people and bitten by dangerous snakes, as they walk to the edge of their community to go to the toilet in the open, late at night (in places where it is the custom not to go during daylight).

In Africa, half of young girls who drop out of school do so because they need to collect water or because the school doesn't have a toilet.

For every £1 spent on water and sanitation programmes, £8 is returned through reduced health costs and increased productivity.

Toilet Twinning raises funds to enable people living in poor communities to have clean water, a basic toilet, and to learn about hygiene - a vital combination that helps end generational poverty.
  • for £60 you can twin a toilet with a single, household latrine in an impoverished community
  • for £240 you can twin with a school block or a toilet block in a displacement camp
You will receive a framed certificate to hang in your loo - featuring a photo of your toilet twin, the latrine's location and even its GPS co-ordinates so you can find the location of your twin online.

               see www.toilettwinning.org for more details.

Albania is an upper-middle income economy with the service sector dominating the country's economy, followed by the industrial sector and agriculture (though in fact agriculture actually employs 47.8% of the population and uses about 24.31% of the land). Located to the northwest of Greece, its population is almost 3 million and its capital is Tirana.

It was communist from 1946-1991. It is 11,100 square miles in area, though 70% of this is  mountainous land, much of it rugged &  inaccessible. A third of the land is forested and although it is a small country, Albania is distinguished for its rich biological diversity. The forests are home to a wide range of mammals, including wolves, bears & wild boars and some rarer lynx, wildcats, pine martens & polecats. The  national symbol of Albania is the golden eagle.

The country has large deposits of petroleum (the largest onshore reserves in Europe) and natural gas, and produced 26,000 barrels of oil per day in the first quarter of 2014. Natural gas production, estimated at about 30 million m3, is sufficient to meet consumer demands. Other natural resources include coal, bauxite, copper and iron ore.

An increasing part of Albania's national income comes from tourism, concentrated mostly along the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea coast. It welcomed around 4.2 million visitors in 2012, mostly from neighbouring countries and the European Union. In 2011 Albania was recommended as a top travel destination by Lonely Planet & in 2014 Albania was nominated number 4 global touristic destination by the New York Times.

In 2011 59% of of the population were Muslim and 17% Christian (mostly Catholic & Eastern Orthodox). Mother Teresa was a world-renowned missionary of Albanian birth.

And as someone once said: "never compare this Book with other books. Comparisons are dangerous. Never think or never say that this Book contains the Word of God. It is the Word of God. It is supernatural in origin, eternal in duration, inexpressible in value, infinite in scope, regenerative in power, infallible in authority, universal in interest, personal in application, inspired in totality. Read it through. Write it down. Pray it in. Work it out. And then pass it on.

The Good News of Easter

N T Wright says: "The resurrection completes the inauguration of God's kingdom. . . . It is the decisive event demonstrating that God's kingdom really has been launched on earth as it is in heaven ... The message of Easter is that God's new world has been unveiled in Jesus Christ and that you're now invited to belong to it.”

Spotlight on free Bible apps

Most free Bible apps allow you to read several different translations, highlight passages and add your own notes. Some have additional free resources that allow you to look up commentary or study notes on any passage, plus optional paid resources such as fuller commentaries.

Some apps only allow you to read over Wi-fi, so if you want to use the app offline check for ones that allow you to download the translations and other resources. Some apps have translations that can be read to you (audio).

Some of the top apps are:

Spotlight on the Joel Community Trust - offering homeless people food, friendship & shelter

The Joel Community Trust was set up in 2010 to raise money for a permanent night shelter for homeless people, a life skills development centre and purpose built accommodation for Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness, all on the site of St Peter's Church, Norbiton.

The first phase of the new night shelter welcomed 56 new guests in its first year of operation (2014-15). It has 10 beds now and will hopefully have 14 in the future, which will provide support for around 70-80 guests each year. Of the 56 new guests they have helped find move on options for 23 of them (11 of the other guests found their own accommodation).

The Trust also hope to help tackle the root causes of homelessness with help from Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness.

FAIRTRADE Fortnight 2015

23 February - 8 March 2015

Try something new in the shops and do some good at the same time.

When you buy products with the FAIRTRADE mark, you know that the Fairtrade ingredients in the product have been produced by small-scale farmers organisations or plantations that pay a fair price to their workers and protect their workers’ rights and the environment.

The producers also get a small additional amount that they can invest in projects (of their own choice) to develop their community e.g. in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment or better business equipment and practices.

Coming Soon - Baptism

Sunday 26th January - Adult Baptismal Service - come and see what it means to find faith in Jesus and be baptised.
